American Democrats are rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential election on Sunday. Harris still needs to be confirmed as the official candidate of the Democratic Party by the party convention in mid-August. However, she already has the endorsements of high-ranking Democrats and the support of more than half of the party delegates. What are her chances of defeating the Republican candidate Donald Trump? A conversation with American journalist and analyst Alexander Kliment.

Democrats are debating who should be their nominee for the presidential election to be held in November. Current U.S. President Joe Biden, who announced on Sunday on X.com that he will not run, has endorsed his vice president Kamala Harris.

Within a few days, other prominent names associated with the Democratic Party got behind her, including Hillary and Bill Clinton and a member of the United States House of Representatives and and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Additionally, a record amount of money from donors was raised by the Democrats after Biden's withdrawal.

„Biden stepping aside and allowing what looks like Kamala Harris to run for the presidency fundamentally changes the entire narrative of the election that we've had up until now,“ says Alexander Kliment, analyst at Eurasia Group, senior writer and editor at GZERO Media and editor of GZERO Daily, a newsletter about global politics.

The Republican Party nominee Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Harris would be an easier opponent than Biden in the fall election. But, according to journalist Alexander Kliment, at this point it's not certain who will win the race in November.

„In one day that narrative has changed. Now you have one old, white and very unpopular candidate, Donald Trump, running against a much younger candidate, a woman, a woman of color, but who will have her own vulnerabilities. And it is by no means assured that she can win this race,“ says Alexandr Kliment, analyst at Eurasia Group and senior writer and editor at GZERO Media.

What does the Democratic Party need to consider when choosing a new candidate for the election? And what are the strengths and weaknesses of Kamala Harris? For more insights and analysis listen to the full 5:59 podcast at the top of this article.
